Another road closure for Swanage this March

With roadworks across Swanage and a rolling programme of road closures for resurfacing about to start, Dorset Council has now announced the closure of another main road. The High Street between the junctions with Linden Road and Hillsea Road, is to be closed on Saturday 14th March 2020 between 8 am and 6 pm. This is to renew a carriageway cover for BT Openreach.

Gas works delay

This follows the news that the closure of Victoria Avenue for gas works is to be extended until Friday 6th March 2020. The temporary road closure has been switched again, to the town side of the Industrial Estate, and works are in progress to make the final connections on Victoria Avenue.

Local residents have voiced concerns about the closure of the High Street on the 14th, if there is any further overrun of the roadworks at Victoria Avenue. If both roads were closed at the same time, it would force all the traffic to use Kings Road West, which is very narrow in places with parked cars either side of the residential street.

Delay Shore Road closure

Institute Road, in the centre of town, remains closed until May, while wider, safer pavements are laid and new drainage is installed. There were fears that the closure would make Station Road, a one way cul de sac at the beginning of May, once Shore Road closed for the summer season but council officials say that plans are in place to delay the Shore Road closure until Institute Road is reopened to traffic.

Meanwhile, a two-week rolling programme of road closures are to begin on Monday 2nd March 2020 across Swanage, while they’re resurfaced. This work was meant to take place last autumn but was postponed due to bad weather. Dorset Council says 20 residential roads will receive a micro-surfacing treatment which is laid over the old road surface, helping its preservation and filling in shallow cracks and holes. It’s then sealed and protected.
