A controlled burn that got out of hand on Rempstone Heath on the Isle of Purbeck was eventually extinguished by firefighters from three fire stations.
The call came at 3.29 pm on Monday 22nd March 2001 and it took fire crews from Swanage, Wareham and Poole to get the blaze under control. The fire was in the Goathorn area of the heath.
“Proved difficult to extinguish”
Swanage Fire Station said:
“One pump and our Land Rover, one pump and Unimog from Wareham and a water carrier from Poole attended a fire on Rempstone Heath this afternoon. The fire was started accidentally but proved difficult to extinguish due to access.”
The extent of the fire meant that crews spent several hours dampening down the site of the blaze, long enough to see the sunset over the heath.
