January – worst month for Covid deaths in Swanage

The Office of National Statistics has published the latest information on the number of deaths due to Covid-19 for every city, town and village across England and Wales, including Swanage.

It shows that in Swanage there were sadly, nine deaths due to Covid-19 registered in January 2021. The number is, in part, due to the Covid outbreak at the Wordsworth House Care Home in Durlston.

This means that the total number of people living in Swanage, who have died due to Covid since the start of the pandemic in March 2020 is 15. The other six deaths were all registered in November 2020.

Corfe Castle and Langton Matravers area

In the Corfe Castle and Langton Matravers area, which also includes Harmans Cross and Studland, there were no deaths in January 2021 due to Covid-19. For the period from the start of the pandemic in March 2020 until January 2021, there have been a total of four deaths related to Covid-19.

Wareham, Sandford and Holton Heath

In Wareham, Sandford and Holton Heath area there were two deaths due to Covid-19 registered in January 2021. This means that the total number of people living in the area, who have died due to Covid since the start of the pandemic in March 2020 is nine.

Bovington, Wool and Lulworth

In Bovington, Wool and Lulworth there was one death due to Covid-19, bringing the total for the area for the whole of the pandemic to two.

Number of Covid cases

This comes as the number of Covid cases in Swanage for the last seven days to Friday 19th February 2021 has dropped to three. This brings the town to well below the average number of cases for England.

Across the Dorset Council area there were 293 people who tested positive for Covid-19 for the last seven days to 24th February 2021, a drop of 22 percent on the previous seven days.

The estimated R number for the healthcare region of South West is 0.6 to 0.9 as of Friday 19th February 2021.

Vaccinations

On Wednesday 24th February, the Purbeck Primary Care Network said it had vaccinated a total of 11,194 patients since the start of the clinics.

This is the local vaccination hub for all those registered with Swanage Medical Practice, Corfe Castle Surgery, Wareham Surgery, Sandford Surgery, Bere Regis Surgery and the Wellbridge Practice.

People in Purbeck have also been receiving the jab at the Bournemouth International Centre hub.
