The chance to see Swanage’s emergency vehicles close up, was too good an opportunity to miss for lots of young children and a few big kids too!
Swanage Fire Station’s open day on Saturday 10th August 2024 proved a big hit, with the firefighters demonstrating the work they do, along with Swanage’s police, ambulance, and coastguard teams.

First open day for a while
It was Swanage Fire Station’s first open day in many years, with pandemic restrictions preventing events like this taking place in recent times.
So this was the first time that many local children had been given the chance to see what goes on behind the big red sliding doors on Kings Road West.

Extinguishing fires
Swanage firefighters Liam and Andy organised the open day which included tours of the emergency service vehicles, demonstrations of extinguishing fires and rescues, plus the chance to meet the emergency services teams.
Liam said:
“It’s always difficult to organise an event like this and get everyone together in the same place at the same time, but lots of people have come along to the open day, which has made it all worthwhile.”
Andy added:
“I’d really like to thank all the businesses that have supported our tombola and blind auction.
“It has really helped to make the day such a success. All money raised will be donated to the Fire Fighters Charity, so it’s all going to a good cause.”
The Fire Fighters Charity supports serving and retired members of the UK’s fire service and their families to live healthier and happier lives, as well as helping those recovering from injury or illness.
An impressive £840 was raised by the open day.
Lots of family and friends were recruited for the day to help out

“It all starts when you’re young”
Swanage station commander Nick Corben said:
“It’s been a fantastic day and I’m really pleased with how well it’s gone, which is mainly down to Liam and Andy, so I’d like to thank them for their time and hard work.
“It’s also great to have been supported by the other emergency services including the police, ambulance staff and coastguard. We’ve been fortunate not to have a shout and all been called away to an emergency, which could have been tricky!
“It’s been good to see so many children here at the fire station, as it all starts when you’re young. Hopefully we’ve sparked their interest in the fire service and some may even go on to become the crew of the future – let’s hope so!”
