Swanage and St Albans Coastguard went to the rescue of a 73 year old walker who had broken his leg on the South West Coast Path to the north of Swanage.
The teams were called to the coastal path between Sheps Hollow and Ballard Down just after midday on Sunday 6th February 2022.

Emergency treatment
Swanage Coastguard reported:
“Coastguard officers provided emergency treatment and requested an aircraft due to the seriousness of the break and location of the incident.
“The rescue helicopter from Lee on Solent, Rescue 175 was tasked and landed in a nearby field.”

Coastguard lit a flare
The coastguard lit a flare to guide the helicopter to the suitable landing spot in a farmer’s field next to the coast footpath.
Once landed, the paramedic crew provided further care to the man before the coastguard teams carried him on a stretcher to the aircraft.
The injured man was then flown to Southampton Hospital for treatment.
