New events to bring laughter and sass to Swanage

In a bold move to attract new audiences The Mowlem in Swanage, Dorset, has announced that it’s to host a stand-up comedy club, as well as a Latin dance party.

The comedy agency Off The Kerb Productions is bringing new emerging talent to perform in The Mowlem’s new venue The Studio, while The Showbar will be taken over by salsa dancing for an evening of Cuban entertainment.

Established comedy circuit

The Mowlem and Off The Kerb Productions have successfully brought top comedians like Jack Dee, Andy Parsons and Rich Hall to perform on stage in the main auditorium.

Now following the sell out performances, The Mowlem will become the 20th venue in the UK on an established comedy circuit.

There will be three comedians performing stand-up, once a month from January 2025 on a Wednesday evening in The Studio.

The Studio, recently refurbished, is proving to be a successful new performance space for events like the Purbeck Film Festival, book talks and dance sessions.

Salsa dance classes started in The Studio in October 2024 on Monday evenings from 6.15 pm run by Bournemouth based Latin dance expert Enrique Perez.

Now it’s planned to have an evening dedicated to Cuban and Latin music and dance in The Showbar on Saturday 30th November 2024.

There will also be salsa classes during the afternoon.

  • Salsa for absolute beginners at 1 pm
  • Salsa for absolute beginners and high beginners at 2 pm

The evening Latin dance party will start at 8 pm with a fun salsa class for all levels and then continue with dancing until midnight.

“Giving the people what they want!”

Operations manager of The Mowlem, Thomas Curtis said:

“The availability of The Studio has led to an exciting expansion of events that we can deliver. We’ve got plenty of good entertainment happening in the main theatre including comedy from top performers, and now we’re able to offer a comedy club in The Studio.

“The comedians are from the same comedy circuit where people like Michael McIntyre first started out, so we’re in for a real mid-week treat.

“With Paul Angel as our new events manager, there’s even more happening each week, and it’s great that the popular salsa classes in The Studio are to move to The Showbar for one evening, bringing a bit of a Cuban rhythm to Swanage.

“The best thing is, that this is all on our doorstep for our local community and hopefully we’re giving the people what they want!”
