No bus for two weeks along main Swanage road due to bridge works

A short stretch of road in Swanage, Dorset, is to be closed while work takes place on a bridge, but the diversion means buses won’t stop along one of the main roads out of town.

The closure will take place from 6 am on Monday 8th, to 6 pm on Friday 19th September 2025 to allow Dorset Council to repair waterproofing and replace steel protection sheets on the bridge along Kings Road West opposite Westover Court flats.

Avoid the closure by using Victoria Avenue, as Court Road is likely to get jammed if too many vehicles attempt to use it

Day and night road closure

Kings Road West from Church Hill to the junction with Court Hill will be completely closed throughout the day and night, to allow the works to be completed safely.

While cars may be able to use Court Road to avoid the closure, the road is too narrow for buses so they’ll be taking a diversion via Victoria Avenue.

This means buses will not be picking up passengers at any bus stops between Swanage station and Herston Cross, which includes the stops along Kings Road West, Court Hill and part of the High Street from Jewsons to Costcutters.

Kings road west

Although the road was resurfaced recently by Dorset Council more work is to take place on the bridge in Kings Road West

Temporary bus stops along Victoria Avenue

Instead buses on routes 30, 35 and 40 will leave Swanage station and travel along Rempstone Road and Victoria Avenue, until they rejoin the usual route along the High Street past The Swanage School.

It is expected there will be a temporary bus stop along Victoria Avenue outside the Emmanuel Baptist Church and also on the other side of the road opposite Ancaster Road.

High street near Jewsons

It could be a long wait at the bus stop on the High Street outside Jewsons, so passengers are advised to walk to Swanage station or the temporary bus stops near the Emmanuel Baptist Church

Bus station

Buses will leave the station and turn left rather than right for a fortnight

Folk festival along the seafront

Separately in Swanage, Shore Road from Victoria Avenue to Ocean Bay will be closed between 8 am and 5 pm on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September 2025 for the Swanage Folk Festival.

Dancers and musicians will be performing along the seafront over the weekend and there will be a parade on the Saturday from about 3 pm.
