Swanage fish and chips

A seaside town wouldn’t be complete without plenty of opportunities to eat fish and chips and Swanage doesn’t disappoint. They are all good but the two main fish and chip shops are next door to each other in The Square opposite the Swanage Museum.

There’s the blue chippy called the Fish Plaice and the green chippy called Harless and they are both extremely popular with queues forming out of the doors during the summer. The Fish Plaice is regularly voted by the local Scout Group to have the best chips in town, while Harlees has indoor seating, so is a better place to head when it’s cold and wet!

Yes, Swanage does have a Wimpy! Many visitors, with childhood memories of being taken to a Wimpy as a treat in pre-McDonald days, are delighted to discover a Wimpy in Swanage. Once they were in every town but now it makes a very welcome, if somewhat retro, addition to Institute Road.

The town doesn’t have any large fast food chains like McDonalds, Burger King or KFC but it does have a Harry Ramsden’s.

If you want more than fish and chips or fast food, there are also a number of good restaurants, cafes, pubs, and Indian and Chinese takeaways.
