Swanage Market to reopen with social distancing

The town council has given the green light to a phased reopening of Swanage’s popular Friday market in the main beach car park.

It will reopen on a trial basis on Friday 15th May 2020 from 8 am to 1 pm, with a single fruit and vegetable stall operating for the first week.

Local outcry

The closure back in March due to the government’s lockdown guidance to prevent the spread of coronavirus, caused a local outcry with many pleading with the council for it to continue.

In the meantime Bridget’s Fruit and Veg offered a delivery service that has proved popular. Now Bridget’s stall will be able to serve its customers again, with the hope that other stalls will also be able to join her over the coming weeks.

In a statement, Swanage Town Council said:

“If this is a success and social distancing arrangements are adhered to, it is intended that more stalls will be added over time, in accordance with government guidelines. In order to ensure safety for customers each trader is required to submit a comprehensive risk assessment before trading.”

Swanage Town Council added that if people did intend to visit the market this Friday, it was advisable to try and avoid the busier morning period, to help ensure that everyone can remain at least two metres away from others at all times.
