Dig this – Swanage seafront gets spruced up!

The operations team for Swanage Town Council has been busy planting out more trees, shrubs and perennials to improve the appearance of the town and its eco credentials.

Making the most of the mild winter temperature, the team has been working hard to plant out more than 450 new plants, mostly along the seafront.

The intention is to add to the permanent planting which provides all year round interest in the flower beds.

Robust plants that tolerate the salty sea air

Taking care to choose robust plants that tolerate the salty sea air, the selection includes grasses, phormiums also known as New Zealand flax, and knifophia, more commonly called the red hot poker for its striking red and orange flower spikes.

In addition, 24 new trees were planted in December 2021 across the town in a variety of locations including Forres Field, Day’s Park and Godlingston Cemetery.

To increase diversity, a wide range of tree species have been planted in Swanage including a handkerchief tree.
