Burlington Chine beach huts damaged by new landslides

Swanage Coastguard has taped off access to beach huts after further cliff landslides at Burlington Chine overnight. The team were called to the scene this morning, following yesterday’s heavy rain and have now extended the taped off area.

The wooden beach huts at the bottom of the Burlington Chine pathway, have been damaged and pushed forward by the cliff collapse. They’ve been boarded up and access has been cordoned off.

Significant landslide

Further along, there has been another significant landslide with vegetation and mud having fallen onto the beach. This is the cliff area where there has been recent substantial erosion since Boxing Day 2019.

A spokesman for the coastguard said:

“The Swanage coastguard team visited the beach this morning and discovered that the landslides had caused damage to the beach huts, so they’ve been taped off and the public are being asked to stay away from the area.”

This follows the closure, earlier this month, of the steps down to the beach at Sheps Hollow, at the far end of Swanage Bay towards Ballard Down. The pathway and handrail partially collapsed due to cliff erosion during Storm Dennis.

Dorset Council has been advised of the situation by the coastguard.

Dorset Council Tweeted:

“There have been landslips overnight at Burlington Chine in Swanage. The area, including the footpath, has been closed by the coastguard. Please avoid the cliffs in this weather, as there’s a high risk of landslips”
