Climber recovering after rescue at Anvil Point

A man on a climbing trip with a friend, is now recovering after being rescued from a cliff just west of Anvil Point by the Swanage Coastguard team on Saturday 7th March 2020. The climber from London, was tired and exhausted, when he became stuck on the cliff face six metres from the bottom.

Rope rescue

The Swanage Coastguard team backed up by the St Alban’s Coastguard team were called to the scene just after 3.30 pm. On arrival, the teams set up for a rope rescue to retrieve the climber, while the Swanage RNLI inshore lifeboat (ILB) was requested to give an option to lower the casualty down to the water rather than pulling him up the cliff.

Swanage Coastguard rescue a tired and exhausted climber

It was decided that the easiest way to recover the casualty was to pull him up the cliff, so the ILB stood by until this was done. The climber was safely recovered to the top of the cliff and checked for any injuries before he was left to warm up.

The teams returned to the station just before 6 pm.

In a statement the Swanage Coastguard said:

“The climber and his colleague did the right thing and called for assistance at an early stage of their situation using the emergency phone at Anvil Point.”
