Wareham Fire crew tackle vehicle fires as heat rises

With the hot weather continuing, a car at Durdle Door near Lulworth caught on fire, shortly followed by a lorry carrying hay near Dorchester.

Wareham Fire Station was called to the vehicle fire at the entrance of the Durdle Door car park at 1.35 pm on Monday 18th July 2022. It’s believed that the car, carrying visitors heading to the beach, caught alight after queuing in traffic to get into the car park.

Part of the A35 near Dorchester was closed as crews tackled the lorry fire

Lorry loaded with hay bales caught alight

In a separate incident on the same day, fire crews were called at 2.30 pm to a lorry transporting hay that was on fire on the A35 just outside Dorchester.

Those first on the scene included firefighters from Dorchester as well as Bere Regis, Portland, Bridport, Beaminster and Weymouth.

After extinguishing the car fire at Durdle Door, Wareham Fire Station was asked to head towards Dorchester.

Wareham Fire Station reported:

“This afternoon, one fire engine also helped our colleagues at Dorchester Fire Station as a relief crew. Sadly a lorry loaded with hay bales caught on fire outside Dorchester.”

Considerable damage was caused to the lorry and the road

Lorry completely destroyed

The blaze completely destroyed the lorry and its load, leaving the A35 between Dorchester and Winterbourne Abbas closed for the rest of the day.

It’s understood that no one was injured in either of the vehicle fires.
