Swanage painters are back with a splash

With plenty of new artwork, Swanage Painting Club’s summer exhibition has opened – the first time in two years.

Hit by Covid restrictions, many local artists were able to continue to paint but had little opportunity to put their work on display. Now they’re pleased to be holding their annual event in Swanage again.

The exhibition is at the Catholic Hall in Rempstone Road

From delicate watercolours to bold oil and acrylic canvases

The summer art exhibition is on from 10 am to 5 pm at the Catholic Church Hall in Rempstone Road until Sunday 6th August 2022.

The paintings range from delicate watercolours to bold oil and acrylic canvases. Many take inspiration from the local surroundings depicting the Swanage shoreline or Purbeck countryside.

Swanage Painting Club, which was founded in 1968, meets on Monday mornings from September to May at the Catholic Church Hall, with many joining in the Isle of Purbeck Arts Club outdoor painting programme over the summer.

“I love painting – it’s so absorbing”

One of the artists exhibiting is Julie Hixon, who actually lives in Cambridge but comes down to Swanage as often as she can to see her parents Alan and Ann Beasley, who live in the town and are also keen Swanage Painting Club members. She said:

“I love painting – it’s so absorbing, you can lose yourself in it. It’s just a hobby but I dream of retiring and doing it full time.”

“We always welcome potential new members”

Another member, Swanage resident Jan Enoch added:

“Over the years, our summer art exhibition has been getting more and more popular. I think the standard of work this year is very high.

“Our club is quite full at the moment but we always welcome potential new members to come along to our meetings to see what we do and find out if they would like to join.”
