Swanage Railway postpones gala in latest blow to local economy

NEWS UPDATE 20th March 2020: Swanage Railway has cancelled all of its services until at least 1st May 2020.

One of the most popular annual events in Swanage, The Swanage Railway Diesel Gala and Beer Festival, has been postponed following the latest coronavirus advice.

It was due to take place in April 2020 and was expected to attract hundreds of tourists into the town for the weekend, filling the guest houses and cafes.

Local economy

Swanage Railway is a nationally well-known visitor attraction bringing in tourists and rail enthusiasts from across the UK and further afield. The increase in visitor numbers during special railway events contributes considerably to the local economy.

In a statement on its Facebook page, Swanage Railway said:

“After fully considering the latest advice from Her Majesty’s Government, with considerable regret we have postponed the April Diesel Gala and Beer Festival.The safety of our staff, customers and suppliers is of paramount importance.

“We are planning a new date in the autumn and will make it known at the appropriate time.”

The railway is currently running its usual timetable but a decision whether this will continue, is expected shortly.
