Welcome return for Wareham Wednesdays as pirates invade!

The major summer fundraiser for Wareham in Dorset – a series of Wednesdays in August with music, funfair stalls and fireworks at the quay – is back after three years.

First it was Dave Griff and the Trouser Band, then it was Michael Jackson tribute act Navi thrilling the audience and next, on Wednesday 17th August 2022, the pirates are launching an invasion of the town. Visitors are warned to expect lots of noise and lots of water!

“Our much-delayed 10th anniversary”

Wareham Wednesdays had become something of a fixture of the summer season attracting visitors from Swanage and across Purbeck, but the water cannon and the fireworks fell silent for 2020 and 2021 because of Covid restrictions.

Dave Burgess, chairman of the organising committee, said:

“It’s our much-delayed 10th anniversary season this year and it feels fantastic to finally be able to get out there, no masks, just lots of happy faces!”

First summer events for three years

The organising committee did stage a firework night last November, but this is the first summer series for three years.

The first week there was a raft race and last week it was the return of one of the world’s most popular Michael Jackson impersonators.

Dave said:

“Once he’s got his make up on you couldn’t tell it wasn’t Michael Jackson, just an incredible likeness and an amazing performer.”

Prepare for a soaking!

Poole Pirates will be leading the attack on Wednesday 17th August 2022. They will sail up the river at about 6.30 pm. They will be met by a local contingent for a water battle that will give everyone a soaking.

The evenings include catering and children’s entertainment. Last week it was Krazy Kev and this week it’s Jamie Jambo. Solo vocalist Lizzy King is providing musical entertainment.

“Raise money for the local community”

The Wareham Wednesdays runs for four weeks during the summer. The last one will be on Wednesday 24th August 2022 when there will be an Elton John tribute act performing.

Dave Burgess, who runs UK Tiles Direct in the town, said:

“As well as being a lot of fun, the evenings raise money for the local community, anyone from the rugby club to the youth club, from disabled people to the Men in Sheds project. We have a meeting at the end of the season and consider applications from worthwhile causes in the area.”
