Plea for anyone in Swanage who can sew, to make face masks

With more evidence that face masks can help prevent the spread of coronavirus when used properly, Swanage Neighbours, who’s coordinating the Swanage Community Coronavirus Response Facebook group, is calling on anyone handy with a sewing machine to help make masks for their volunteers.

Surgical face masks are hard to buy and many front line staff need them desperately, so in a bid not to deprive key workers from supplies, the group is asking people to sew some for them.

Helping their neighbours

The masks will go to volunteers in Swanage who are helping their neighbours with shopping and picking up prescriptions in town. They are not intended to replace personal protective equipment for key workers but are to support those who otherwise would have nothing to protect themselves or others. Anyone wearing a mask should follow UK Government guidelines and carry out good hand hygiene.

Laura Rowan who set up the Swanage Community Coronavirus Response Facebook group said:

“We have such an active and rapidly growing volunteer force here in Swanage, if anyone is able to help us make masks or source materials to distribute to those who can, we would be so grateful”

One of the group’s district coordinators, Sarah Brookes has recorded a five minute video to show how easy it is to make a face mask using 100 percent close-weave cotton.

Anyone who can volunteer to make the face masks, should message Laura Rowan via the Swanage Community Coronavirus Response Facebook group.
