Hospice care charity expands its clinical team in Purbeck

Two new members of staff have been recruited to the Lewis-Manning Hospice Care team to deliver services in Swanage and across Purbeck.

Jo Foster and Rebecca Thake have joined as health care assistants to help and support people with life-limiting illnesses, along with their carers and loved ones.

Bringing care into people’s homes

Lewis-Manning Hospice Care runs a hospice in Poole but is now rolling out its services to the local community, bringing care into people’s homes.

Jo Foster said:

“I’m really enjoying my new role at Lewis-Manning Hospice Care. I love being an integral part of the community and it’s so wonderful to know that we will be able to help more and more patients across Purbeck, closer to their homes. There are busy times ahead!

“I’m delighted to see and find out that Lewis-Manning’s incredible service is getting better known in the Purbeck area and our patients are incredibly grateful for the support that they are receiving.”

Weekly hospice day care sessions in Wareham

In September 2022, the charity started weekly hospice day care sessions at Wareham and Swanage Rugby Club in Wareham for those with life-limiting illnesses and hopes to organise a similar scheme in Swanage too.

Lewis-Manning also provides a breathlessness service at Swanage Hospital for those with life-limiting respiratory conditions, such as COPD and lung cancer.

“Ambitious plans”

Lewis-Manning senior staff nurse for Purbeck, Nicky Cherrett said:

“It’s great to have Jo and Rebecca as part of our team. We have ambitious plans to continue our expansion of services as part of our ongoing strategy to bring hospice care ‘Closer to home’.

“These wonderful women will play a pivotal part in this growth and enable us to help more people in the community.”

Fundraising to support its services

Last July, the charity opened a shop in Station Road in Swanage to help raise funds to support its services in Purbeck.

It’s also organising a spectacular festival of lights on Saturday 10th December 2022 at Swanage Beach to celebrate the lives of loved ones with the support of people in similar circumstances.

The evening is free for all to join, but supporters are being encouraged to make a donation of £5 a candle – they can be reserved online, but will also be available on the evening at the event.

All money raised on the night will be used to fund family support and bereavement services and hospice daycare facilities in Purbeck.
