Locals given option to donate Co-op reward cash to coronavirus fund

The Swanage Co-op is giving local residents the chance to be a local hero and donate the reward money that they’ve earned by shopping at the store, to the Co-op Members’ Coronavirus Fund, to alleviate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

As part of a national campaign, the new changes mean that everyone with a Co-op members card, now has an option to donate some or all of their five percent reward balance to the Co‑op Members’ Coronavirus Fund if they wish.

There’s no change to the one percent reward, that will still go back to their chosen local cause.

Food banks, funerals and community causes

The Co-op says the money that’s raised through member reward donations will go to support food banks, help pay for the funerals of key workers when the bereaved can’t afford to, and support community causes affected by the outbreak.

In order to donate, members need to go to the Co-op website and log in to their account, up until 31st August 2020.

The Co-op says in an email to all its members:

“We’re always looking for ways to support good causes in the community. We will keep you updated when new opportunities arise and where these funds are being donated to.
On an ongoing basis we will be looking to further develop ideas for those members who may wish to continue allocating some or all of their 5% to good causes.”

Meanwhile, the Co-op in Swanage has implemented measures to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, including limiting the number of people in the store, operating a one-way system for aisles, marking out socially-distanced queues and installing perspex shields at tills.
