Star Wars returns to Purbeck: The sequel!

The team behind the Star Wars: Andor TV series have set up camp again near Swanage in Dorset, ahead of filming for the second season of the popular TV programme for Disney+.

Following critical acclaim for the first series, which is a prequel to the blockbuster Star Wars movie Rogue One, the crew are returning to film for a second time at Winspit Quarry on the Purbeck coast near Worth Matravers.

Film crew return to Winspit Quarry

In May 2021, the film company took over the disused quarry as a filming location for the spy thriller following the character Cassian Andor, played by Mexican actor Diego Luna. He plays a thief who becomes a revolutionary and eventually joins the rebellion against the Empire.

Trucks with lighting rigs and filming equipment began to arrive on Saturday 14th April 2023 at the field in Acton, a short drive from the quarry. This will be the base, like last time, with a marquee and trailers for the actors.

Security is expected to be tight

Security at the quarry, now owned by the National Trust, is expected to be tight again and members of the public are unlikely to be allowed to watch the filming.

In 2021, security guards blocked off routes down to the quarry so filming could take place without any distractions.

Nominated for a Golden Globe Award

Star of the show, actor Diego Luna was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for best actor in a television series drama for the part that he played in the first season of Star Wars: Andor which was aired in 2022.

The second season of 12 episodes started filming in November 2022 and is expected to continue until August 2023, with a release date in 2024.

It’s not known how long the crew will be filming at Winspit Quarry, although last time it was only for a few days.

The disused Purbeck stone quarry has been used as a film location before, most memorably for a TV episode of Dr Who with actor Tom Baker in 1979.
