Children led into Tilly Whim caves to camp overnight

A large group of adults and children have been prevented by Swanage Coastguard from camping overnight in the dangerous Tilly Whim caves area at Durlston.

Following a report yesterday evening from an eyewitness who saw the group heading towards the caves with camping gear, the Swanage Coastguard went to the area to discover that seven adults along with three children had scaled the wall that blocked off the area.

Treacherous condition

The caves are closed due to their treacherous condition and there are clear signs warning of the danger. The site is located on a ledge of an unstable cliff.

The Swanage Coastguard said:

“The group were asked to leave and reminded that no overnight camping is currently allowed. They commented that they thought they were out of the way but were leaving to return to London.”

Left the area safely

The coastguard then ensured that the children and adults all left the area safely.

The incident was first reported on Facebook and the coastguard wishes to remind everyone that they should ring 999 if they see people in a dangerous position or in an emergency situation.
