Swanage and Purbeck are set to take a battering from the elements this weekend as weather warnings have been issued for the area.
The Met Office has put out a yellow weather warning for rain and wind for Friday 2nd October 2020 from 3 am to 8 pm.
An amber warning for rain is set to be in place for the rest of the weekend until 6 am on Sunday.
The Environment Agency has also issued a flood warning for Swanage, stating that large and powerful waves are likely to overtop the town’s sea defences.
Dorset Council and the Environment Agency are keeping a careful eye on the roads at risk of flooding.
Be careful on the roads
People are advised to expect travel disruption as a result.
Swanage Coastguard has reported flooding along Shore Road and the High Street, with the area now closed to traffic.
The Sandbanks Ferry has been put on hold until the weather is suitable to resume the service.
The Met Office also warns that there may be spray and flooding on some roads, and that coastal areas such as Swanage could be hit be sea spray and large waves.
How to stay safe
Dorset Council urges residents to take the following steps to ensure their safety:
- Keep clear from cliffs, as there is a risk of rockfall
- Take care on beaches, particularly around high tide
- If you plan to drive, make sure you check the weather conditions before setting out
- Do not drive through flood water
- Make sure garden furniture is secured
Councillor Ray Bryan, Dorset Council’s portfolio holder for Highways, Travel and Environment, said:
“We want residents and visitors to stay safe and well. With winds this strong and with the amount of rain forecast, there is a possibility of risk to life, especially along the coast.
“We will be working alongside our partners to make sure everyone is as safe as possible this weekend, but our advice is to stay away from flooded areas and take extra care if you head to the coast.”
