Swanage firefighters among dozens called to help deal with thatched house blaze

Firefighters from Swanage were mobilised to assist as a house fire saw crews from all over Dorset called to action.

At 6.43 pm on Thursday 22nd October 2020, the fire service was called to a reported kitchen fire in a semi-detached house in the village of Poxwell just east of Weymouth.

The fire was said to be spreading through the property’s thatched roof.

By 8.15 pm, there were 13 fire crews and around 65 firefighters at the scene. These included teams from Weymouth, Wareham, Bere Regis, Portland, Dorchester, Hamworthy, Poole, Beaminster, Bridport and Westbourne.

In addition, an aerial ladder platform from Westbourne, a water carrier from Poole and support units from Hamworthy and Poole were also at the scene.

Swanage firefighters were called later as a relief crew.

Fire now under control

By 11 pm, firefighters had the blaze under control, and the number of crews present was scaled back.

As of 6.30 am, two crews remained on the scene damping down the properties.

The roof of the property was visibly destroyed by the fire.
