Swanage RNLI rescue drifting yacht

In the early hours of the morning, the Swanage Lifeboat crew went to the aid of a yacht that had lost power and was drifting in the sea off Anvil Point near Swanage.

In fine weather with good visibility, the Shannon all weather lifeboat was launched at 2.19 am on Sunday 28th March 2021.

“Summoned from their beds”

Swanage Lifeboat Station reported:

“As the clocks were jumping forwards to meet British Summer Time, the Swanage volunteer crew were summoned from their beds to assist the crew of an 11 metre yacht that was drifting without power 11 nautical miles south of Swanage.

“About 45 minutes later the yacht was found about seven nautical miles southeast of Anvil Point drifting in choppy seas.”

The yacht was towed to Poole Harbour

Safety of Poole Harbour

The decision was made to tow the yacht into the safety of Poole Harbour. The report continued:

“The tow was steady in the conditions and the lifeboat and casualty yacht approached Poole Quay Boat Haven at 6 am. The yacht was secured, and the Shannon class lifeboat returned to Swanage to be re-housed and re-fuelled. The volunteer crew returned home shortly after 7 am.”
