Swanage firefighters among team to tackle large heath fire

More than 60 firefighters including crews from Swanage and Wareham, were deployed to bring a fierce heath fire near Wimborne in Dorset, under control.

The call to the blaze at White Sheet Plantation, came at 4.48 pm on Monday 5th April 2021. Only earlier that day, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service had issued an Amber alert for wildfires due to the dry and windy weather conditions.

Heath fire near Wimborne

Fire was spreading quickly

As the fire was spreading quickly, crews and appliances from Swanage, Wareham, Wimborne, Ferndown, Poole, Verwood, Christchurch, Sturminster Newton, Blandford and Redhill Park, Ringwood and Hamworthy, were all deployed to the scene.

While the fire is now under control, two appliances were left overnight to ensure that the fire didn’t reignite.

Over 60 firefighters tackled the heath fire near Wimborne

“Cause of the blaze is not yet known”

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said:

“Local people are asked to avoid the area while the firefighting operation continues. The cause of the blaze is not yet known.

“A decision will be made in the morning about any further action needed.”

Small fire on the railway embankment

It was a busy afternoon for Swanage Fire Station, as earlier a crew had been called to a small fire on the railway embankment. One pump and the Land Rover were deployed at 1.13 pm and the fire was quickly extinguished.
