Man airlifted to hospital after Durdle Door jump

Despite warnings about the dangers, a man injured himself after leaping off the top of the limestone arch near Lulworth in Dorset.

It happened on Tuesday 1st June 2021, a year after a similar incident which saw three men hospitalised after attempting the jump into the shallow sea below.

Yet again, a multi-agency response was triggered and beachgoers had to be moved to allow room for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance to land.

“Sustained a dislocated shoulder”

Kimmeridge Coastguard reported:

“After another busy day on Bank Holiday Monday in which the team were tasked to numerous incidents at Durdle Door involving ankle injuries, and a person with a diabetes episode, we were again requested to assist our colleagues at Lulworth Coastguard, Purbeck Police, Lulworth Rangers from the Lulworth Estate and Lulworth Responders yesterday afternoon at the same location.

“A person had sustained a dislocated shoulder and we were requested to secure a safe cordon for helimed air ambulance to land and take off on a very crowded beach.

The casualty was flown to Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester for further treatment.

It was later confirmed by the coastguard, that the man who had dislocated his shoulder had jumped off the top of Durdle Door.

Extreme pressures on the ambulance service

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust announced that it had declared a critical incident due to the extreme pressures on its service across south west England.

While the trust serves a total population of more than 5.5 million, it estimates that it receives an influx of over 23 million visitors each year.
