Corfe Castle music event made possible by new marquee

A music performance at Sandy Hill Arts in Corfe Castle has been able to go ahead this autumn, thanks to the Arts Council England providing the funding for a marquee, which has created a new indoor events space.

On Saturday 28th October 2023, the Dorset arts hub, which is also home to many artists and the Boilerhouse Gallery, will be hosting the Soothsayers, a band from London which fuses Dub, Reggae, Afrobeat and Jazz.

The new marquee means events can take place for more of the year

Sheltered from wet weather

Since Sandy Hill Arts was set up as a charity in May 2022, it has been shifting the focus of the site from being an industrial estate for artists – there’s about 17 studios rented out – to creating more of a community for artists.

As well as the Boilerhouse Gallery, it’s now offering live music, performing arts, exhibitions, workshops, and outreach initiatives.

Previously all performances were outdoors and subject to the weather conditions but a grant from The Arts Council National Lottery of £28,129 awarded in June 2023, made the purchase of a new marquee possible, allowing performers to be booked in the autumn and spring, as well as the summer.

The Soothsayers – Sandy Hill Arts is attracting more diverse music to Dorset

“Lively, fun evening inside our marquee!”

The grant is also funding a programme of diverse music events – the Iyatra Quartet performed in September 2023 and now there’s the Soothsayers’ performance in October 2023 with vocalist Julia Biel.

A spokesperson for Sandy Hill Arts said:

“We are so excited that Julia Biel – British jazz singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist – will be on vocals, hailed by The Independent as ‘the best British vocalist to emerge in an age’.

“Their sound is guaranteed to be deep, hypnotic and up-lifting. Mixed with politically conscious lyrics and biting social commentary, Soothsayers’ heavy, joyful, dance inducing grooves are a much needed balm for these times.

“It promises to be a lively, fun evening inside our marquee!”

There will be an interval and a bar running throughout the evening. Doors to the marquee will open from 7 pm and music goers are advised to dress for the cool autumn weather.
