Coroner opens inquest into death of man on Lulworth Estate

A man on holiday with his family, who died when he fell off rocks at Stair Hole near Lulworth Cove in Dorset, was 47 year old Azhar Baig from Luton.

At the coroner’s court hearing in Bournemouth on Thursday 22nd July 2021, Dorset Coroner Rachael Griffin opened and adjourned the inquest into his death to a later date.

Multi-agency emergency response

The incident happened on the evening of Sunday 18th July 2021, triggering a multi-agency emergency response including South Western Ambulance Service, Weymouth Lifeboat, Kimmeridge and Lulworth Coastguard teams and Dorset Police.

A Dorset Police spokesperson said:

“Dorset Police received a report at around 6.30 pm on Sunday 18th July 2021 that a man had fallen off rocks at Stair Hole near to Lulworth Cove in the Purbeck area. Officers attended the incident together with other emergency services.

“Very sadly, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed and the coroner has been notified. There were no suspicious circumstances.”

“Great sorrow and sadness”

On social media, respects were paid to Azhar Baig and it was asked that he should be remembered in prayers. Along with posting a picture, the Facebook group said:

“It is with great sorrow and sadness to inform you of the passing away of Azhar Baig…condolences to his family.”

This is the second death in two months on the Lulworth Estate coastline. In June 2021, Tahira Jabeen from Birmingham died after falling from the cliffs leading down to the Man O War beach next to Durdle Door.
