More used to putting on a show with some of the big beasts of the armoured world, The Tank Museum at Bovington is now preparing for a display on a smaller scale.
The South West’s biggest scale model show is back for the first time since February 2020, for two days from Saturday 4th to Sunday 5th September 2021.
The event has grown in popularity, drawing in modelmakers from far and wide
Against a backdrop of real tanks
Live workshops and demonstrations, as well as stalls selling the latest modelling kits and accessories, will be set against a backdrop of real tanks and armoured vehicles as the South West Model Show returns after an extended break.
Rosanna Dean, events manager, said:
“There has always been a strong affinity between model makers and military vehicle enthusiasts, and the South West Model show combines these two passions in the perfect setting. We’re so pleased to be welcoming people back.”
Visitors will get a chance to attend modelmaking workshops
Wide range of models
The event has steadily grown in popularity. Visitors can look forward to a display of models from across the spectrum, including trains, planes, boats, science-fiction icons like the Daleks and Star Wars, and of course, tanks.
There is a full programme of workshops for model enthusiasts, including airbrushing techniques and tips on how to build a model tank, with a chance to ask the experts any questions about scale modelling.
Exterminating all opposition – the Daleks never fail to draw a crowd
“It’s a huge team effort”
Bound to be a popular item, there is a special question and answer session with the Daleks. Visitors are invited to quiz them on everything from Dr Who, to their favourite tank.
Jasmine White, senior events executive, said:
“A lot goes on behind the scenes to put an event like this on. It’s a huge team effort from all our online content from marketing, the events team that manage it and handle the traders and exhibitors, to the front of house team that coordinate everyone coming into the museum and the operations team that ensure everyone has a table or stall.”
Star Wars models make an appearance
“It’s a great family day out”
The show spreads across three different parts of the museum, as well as outside, and this year it’s in conjunction with the monthly food market, offering some of Dorset’s finest local produce.
Jasmine added:
“We have a mix of model enthusiasts, beginners and engineers of all ages. But overall, it’s a great family day out.”
