A donation of £3,000 has been sent from Swanage and Purbeck Rotary to help those without homes following the recent earthquake in Morocco and flooding in Libya.
The Rotary Fete in Swanage raised more than £5,000 and following the news of the disasters, it decided to give part of the proceeds to Shelterbox.

Donation of £3,000 to Shelterbox
Shelterbox, a charity originally founded by a Rotary club in Cornwall, is one of the first organisations to get to disaster zones around the world, bringing essential supplies and providing temporary shelter for those who have lost their homes.
Items like tents, tarpaulins, tools, blankets, mosquito nets, cooking sets and water filters are delivered with the aim of meeting the most urgent needs, so those affected can start to earn a living, send their children to school and rebuild their homes.
Swanage and Purbeck Rotary raises money for both local and international causes. At the summer fete in August 2023 £3,000 of medical kit was presented to Swanage’s first responders by Rotary president elect Maggie Hardy (far left) and Rotary president Dai Hounsell (centre)
“Amazed at how extraordinarily generous people are in Swanage”
President of Swanage and Purbeck Rotary Dai Hounsell said:
“When you hear about these awful disasters, it’s not easy to know how best to help but Rotary has supported the charity Shelterbox for a long time, because we know they will have people on the ground delivering the help to those who really need it.
“Rotary has always supported charities locally and internationally and we immediately realised that sending £3,000 to Shelterbox could really be lifesaving to people struggling in the aftermath of the Moroccan earthquake and the flooding in Libya.
“In the past, Rotary has organised street collections but this time we’re asking local people to donate via a QR code on our website and we will make sure it gets to really help people on the ground.
“We’ve always been amazed at how extraordinarily generous people are in Swanage – it’s really remarkable. If anyone would like to donate that would be really appreciated.”
