Injured woman rescued by helicopter from Purbeck coast path

Swanage and St Albans Coastguard teams were called to help a walker who had fallen and sustained a serious leg injury but due to the remote location, the coastguard helicopter had to be requested to get her to hospital.

The woman was walking along the Purbeck stretch of the South West Coast Path near to the western mile markers – two towers used to help shipping measure their speed.

“Difficult terrain”

Swanage Coastguard reported:

“The team located a female walker who had fallen on the lower coastal path causing a serious leg injury.

“Due to the location being a mile to the nearest road and with difficult terrain, the helicopter was requested to assist in the extraction of the injured lady.”

The coastguard teams assisted the helicopter crew, before the woman was winched up to the helicopter and taken to Poole Hospital.
