‘No dogs on Swanage Beach’ rule to be enforced

Following an easing of the government’s recent coronavirus guidelines, Dorset Council says it will now be enforcing the restrictions for dogs on beaches that had previously been relaxed.

In order to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, dog owners have been allowed to continue to walk their dog on Swanage Beach, as long as the dog was on a lead, giving them maximum space to remain socially distanced from other people.

Now the spring and summer regulations that ban dogs from the beach, that should have started in Swanage on Friday 1st May, will be enforced and dog owners may be fined if they don’t comply.

Will start on Friday 22nd May 2020

The new rules for dogs on beaches will start on Friday 22nd May 2020 and will apply to Swanage Main Beach, as well as all the beaches in the county where Dorset Council is responsible for the rules.

While Swanage Main Beach is owned by Swanage Town Council, it’s Dorset Council that administers the legal regulations covering the beach.

Councillor Tony Alford, Dorset Council’s Portfolio Holder for customer, community and regulatory services, said:

“The restrictions have been put in place so that local families can enjoy the beach safely at a two metres distance from people who are not part of their household.”
