Woman and child seriously injured in car collision near Wareham

The air ambulance flew a child with serious injuries to hospital in Southampton following a collision between two vehicles on the Sandford Road near Wareham in Dorset.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam footage to come forward as they investigate the circumstances of the incident.

Driver also had serious injuries

Dorset Police say that at 2.50 pm on Sunday 27th August 2023 they received a report of a two vehicle collision involving a black Volkswagen Up! and a white Vauxhall Zafira on the A351 Sandford Road at Sandford.

A child who was a passenger in the Volkswagen was taken by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital for treatment to injuries that are believed to be serious but not life-threatening or life-changing.

A woman who was the driver of the Volkswagen was also taken to hospital for treatment to serious injuries.

All other occupants of the vehicles were checked over by the ambulance at the scene and were not believed to have sustained serious injuries.

Long traffic tailbacks

Road closures were put in place as emergency services responded to the incident resulting in long traffic tailbacks around Sandford.

This was the second day in a row that traffic in the area came to a standstill due to a traffic incident.

Police constable Adam Carr of the roads policing team said:

“We are conducting enquiries to establish the full circumstances of this collision and I would urge anyone who saw what happened or motorists who might have captured relevant dashcam footage to please contact us.

“I would also like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding during the road closures.”
