‘Leave Space’ signs to make Swanage safer

Signs to remind everyone to social distance have been popping up all over the centre of Swanage in a bid to help keep the town safer from the spread of coronavirus.

The white stencilled ‘Leave Space’ messages have been sprayed on pavements at key pedestrian pinch points in town and even on the brand new paving in Institute Road.

A gentle reminder to be patient and let people pass safely

A Swanage town council official said:

“We’re doing this to give residents and visitors a gentle reminder to be patient and let people pass safely. The aim is to help make Swanage a safe place to live and visit as the shops start to reopen and the town centre gets busier.

“While we were spraying the message on the pavement in Institute Road, the highway team turned up to finish some work on the town centre improvement scheme and at first were unhappy that we were marking their newly completed paving, however when they realised what we were doing, they were fine!”

The white paint is non-permanent and will fade over time. It can be reapplied as required.

Retail outlets are also displaying their own signs

Other social distancing signs have also appeared outside newly opened shops as the retail outlets organise queuing in an orderly, evenly spaced out way.

There’s also a large banner on the corner of Shore Road and Victoria Avenue.

The ‘Leave Space’ signs are also appearing in other Dorset towns, so will become a familiar sight across the county.
