Lifeboat crew called to aid fishing boat after engine fails

Poole’s lifeboat crew rushed out to sea to help a fishing boat in distress at Studland.

The crew set out onto choppy waters at 2.30 pm on Sunday September 26th 2020 to rescue the two people aboard the 14 foot boat. The boat’s engine had failed and it was reportedly filling with water.

“Queasy and unwell”

While the pair aboard were both safe, one of them was feeling “queasy and unwell” at the time of rescue.

The lifeboat crew attached a towline to the boat and brought it back through Poole Harbour to Hamworthy.

The crew reported:

“Conditions were fine and sunny with a fresh north westerly wind, that was creating a lot of chop.

“The lifeboat crew were soon on the scene and they checked that the people were ok – one of the persons on-board was feeling queasy and unwell.

“A towline was attached, and the vessel was brought back through Poole Harbour to the slipway at Hamworthy where the Poole Coastguard rescue team were on hand to help recover the vessel ashore.”

Busy weekend for the lifeboat

Studland was just one of the three calls Poole Lifeboat Station received over the weekend. On Saturday 26th September 2020, the crew faced an emergency when a kayaker vanished from their group.

A group of four kayakers were paddling through Poole Harbour – and were on their way back to shore due to the cold. Three of the group lost sight of the fourth and called 999 for help.

After a search across the harbour, all four of them were found safe and well.

Poole Lifeboat volunteer helm, Jonathan Clark said:

“Conditions were very choppy out in the harbour and challenging. The kayakers did the right thing calling 999 to ask for help.

“If you are at all in doubt, it is always better to be safe than sorry, as conditions can change very quickly.”

Racing yacht in trouble

In the third rescue in three days for the volunteer Poole Lifeboat crew, they were also called to the rescue of an 18 foot mini trans-Atlantic race yacht that had lost both its rudders.

At around 2 pm on Friday September 25th 2020, the crew went to the aid of three people on board the afflicted boat, which was located about four miles south of the entrance to Poole Harbour.

After a passing yacht helped get the tow underway, the lifeboat completed the job and brought the boat back safely into Poole Harbour.
