Membership drive by Dorset Wildlife Trust after year of loss

With 2020 tarnished by Purbeck’s devastating Wareham Forest Fire, the Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) is inviting new members to sign up in the new year for a discounted price.

The conservation charity is offering people a full year’s membership for half the price – with their money going to help support the trust’s vital conservation work.

In spite of the coronavirus pandemic, the DWT has soldiered on in protecting the county’s natural habitats, helping to maintain Dorset’s stunning landscape and diverse wildlife.

“There is hope” for nature

Dorset Wildlife Trust Support Care Officer, Nancy Taylor, said:

“In 2021 the importance of nature in our lives has never been clearer. People have reconnected with the natural world on their doorstep, appreciating the positive impact of nature on their wellbeing.

“But our wildlife is disappearing at an alarming rate. Some of our most-loved species are threatened, with 26 percent of UK mammals in danger of disappearing altogether and hedgehogs, red squirrels, bats, turtle doves, cuckoo, water voles and basking sharks all at risk.

“But there is hope. By becoming a member, you directly contribute to protecting the habitats of endangered species in Dorset. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s work to care for these places is only possible through the generosity of our members and without them we wouldn’t be able to achieve all that we do for wildlife in Dorset.”

Trust facing challenges

Throughout 2020, Dorset’s countryside has faced numerous testing situations beyond the pandemic, including instances of vandalism and fly-tipping.

One of the most notable was the Wareham Forest Fire which initially tore through the area back in May 2020 before setting off again in June.

The May fire tore through the area for two weeks, and dozens of firefighters were called to the scene – including crews from Swanage.

Forestry England – the organisation that manages the land – estimated that it will take the area decades to fully recover.

How to join

Anyone who wants to sign up for their half price membership of the Dorset Wildlife Trust can do so here.

The reduced membership fee offer is available until the end of January 2021.
