Road closure to reinstate Swanage zebra crossing

Kings Road East by the junction with the High Street in Swanage, is to be temporarily shut to traffic on Thursday 25th March 2021 to allow the zebra crossing markings outside the library to be reinstated.

Dorset Council, who is undertaking the work, says that the closure is expected to take place in the evening between 8 pm and 11 pm.

Kings Road East will be temporarily reversed

The existing one-way order in Kings Road East will be temporarily suspended during this time to allow access to properties while the works are in progress.

There will also be what the council calls a “small amount of work” on the High Street which means that it will be closed for short periods of time not exceeding 15 minutes.

Zebra crossing removed while work took place in Institute Road

The zebra crossing outside the library was removed at the beginning of 2020 while the one way direction of Kings Road East was reversed to allow traffic to avoid Institute Road, while work took place to widen its pavements.

There was an experiment to see if the permanent reversal of the Kings Road East one way system would be beneficial to the flow of traffic, but after a short trial period the idea was scrapped.

Work is also currently taking place to reinstate the traffic island opposite Swanage Library.
