Climber airlifted to hospital after cliff fall at Winspit

Ambulance, coastguard and fire crews all went to the aid of two climbers who got into difficulty at Winspit near Worth Matravers.

The emergency services were called at 3.17 pm on Saturday 24th April 2021 to the disused quarry at Winspit on the Purbeck coast, which is a popular place for rock climbing.

Fallen with leg injuries

Swanage Coastguard said their team were tasked to support colleagues from St Albans with a climber who had fallen with leg injuries. A second climber had also fallen, having raised the alarm and had a possible broken ankle.

The Swanage Ambulance Car (RRV) was quickly at the scene followed by an ambulance and Swanage and Poole Fire crews.

Coastguard teams from St Albans, Swanage and Kimmeridge also arrived to help, along with the coastguard rescue helicopter from Lee on Solent.

“Climber airlifted to Poole”

Swanage Coastguard reported:

“Both climbers received treatment, with the first climber airlifted to Poole and the second climber stretchered out to an ambulance.”

“Great inter agency working between all services”

Swanage Fire Station added:

“The RRV from Swanage was first in attendance to ensure quick assessment of both casualties.

“Great inter agency working between all services made sure the casualties were treated carefully on the scene and transferred to hospital as quickly as possible.”
