Old explosive device found in Studland pond

Purbeck Police had to put in place a 50 metre cordon near Ferry Road in Studland after the discovery of ordnance believed to date from either World War One or Two.

Walkers and motorists were asked to avoid the area and the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were called in to deal with the incident.

“The ordnance was removed by the EOD team”

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said:

“We received a report at around 8 am on Tuesday 22nd February 2022 that an old ordnance had been found in a pond near to Ferry Road in Studland.

“The ordnance was removed by the EOD team and the cordon was lifted at around 2.10 pm.”

Studland was used for military training during the two World Wars

It’s not uncommon to find old ordnance in Studland, as the area was used for military training during the two World Wars.

A World War One hand grenade was discovered in the nearby Middle Beach car park in Studland in December 2021. It too was made safe by the EOD team.
