The Salt Pig Too – urban farm shop and restaurant serving locally sourced Purbeck produce

Many thanks to Stephen Patterson (General Manager) and Martin Johnson (customer) at The Salt Pig Too.

The Salt Pig Too in Swanage is the sister shop to The Salt Pig in Wareham and both are owned by James Warren, who has a passion for ensuring that all the produce that they sell is locally sourced and sustainable.

The urban farm shop, butchery and cafe in Institute Road, opened in 2018 and the team take pride in the fact that the food served is freshly prepared and cooked in the kitchen and that no ready-made products are bought in. They also make their own bacon and sausages on site with pork from their own rare breed pigs.

“We feed the people of Purbeck with Purbeck produce…it tastes absolutely amazing. We only use the top, top quality ingredients. A lot of our food is cooked over charcoal which gives it that x-factor.”

The manager, Stephen Patterson

Martin Johnson’s favourite place for coffee: The Salt Pig Too

A Salt Pig Too regular customer is Martin Johnson. He’s travelled the world as a singer but chooses the cafe as his regular ‘go to’ place for morning coffee.

“I like the people who work here. I know them all and they’re all friends of mine basically, so it’s really nice to say, “Hi, how are you doing, what you doing, where have you been?” I know everything that goes on here!”

Where does the produce at Salt Pig Too come from?

  • Beef: White Park cattle, an ancient breed of beef cattle from Richard and Carol Pitman at Wytch Farm.
  • Lamb and mutton: Julian Cranton at Steeple Leaze Farm. The sheep graze on pasture throughout Tyneham and Kimmeridge valley.
  • Pork: Mangalitsa and Berkshire pigs that are reared in Arne and Creech.
  • Game: Sourced from several local shoots.
  • Seafood: Ian and Annie – Fishing aboard ‘The Happy Hooker’ provide fresh fish, crab and lobster. Nick Ford – the last of the fishermen to launch from Kimmeridge Bay, also provides crab and lobster.

Also available are locally grown vegetables, cheeses, smoked salmon, local wine, beers and cider. As well as coffee, tea and cakes!
