Swanage man jailed for possession of illegal drugs with intent to supply

A Swanage man has been jailed for two years and nine months after being caught in possession of Class A and B drugs.

32-year-old Matthew Kenneth Timothy Bates of Higher Day’s Road pleaded guilty to Bournemouth Crown Court on Thursday 24th September 2020 to:

  • two counts of possession of a controlled drug of class A with intent to supply
  • possession of a controlled drug of class B with intent to supply
  • resisting or wilfully obstructing a constable in the performance of their duties

He was sentenced on Monday 8th March 2021.

About the incident

On Thursday 1st August 2019 at about 11 pm, Dorset Police were informed about a Seat car on Exeter Road, the driver of which was believed to have wraps of white power on his lap.

When officers found and approached the car, he was spotted putting a substance in his hooded top’s pocket.

He then left the vehicle and tried to leave, but officers stopped him, and he began to fight back as they tried to detain him. He was found to be in possession of suspected illegal drugs and a small amount of cash.

He was arrested and was taken into custody. When his home address was searched, a sock containing £990 in cash was found.

The seized drugs were found to be cocaine, ketamine and MDMA – and were estimated to be worth between £540 and £1,150.

Drug crime has “detrimental impact” on communities

Detective Constable Kelly Wood of Weymouth CID, said: 

“I am pleased that we were able to bring Bates before the court. Drug-related crime can have a real detrimental impact on our communities and we are determined to do all we can to catch offenders.
