New bins give Swanage seafront a better look

Shore Road in Swanage is being given a tidier appearance for the summer, as the old wheelie bins have been replaced with new smarter litter bins.

While the wheelie bins were practical, they didn’t enhance the beach promenade.

Emptied more regularly

The new bins are less obtrusive and although they can take less rubbish, they will be easier to be emptied more regularly by Dorset Council’s waste collection team.

It’s likely that they will fill up quickly on busy days so Litter Free Dorset is encouraging visitors and residents not to overfill the bins but take their rubbish home if they are full.

“A bit nicer to look at”

Councillor Jill Haynes, Dorset Council’s portfolio holder for customer and community services, said:

“These new litter bins for Swanage seafront will replace the old black wheelie bins we’ve had in place for a while now. The new bins have been paid for out of Dorset Council’s share of the Welcome Back Fund, which was set up by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to support the safe return to high streets and help build back better from the pandemic.

“These standard-style litter bins are a bit nicer to look at and also give us more flexibility when emptying, as we do not need a large goods vehicle to lift them.

“The bins’ smaller opening should also prove harder for seagulls to get into and will hopefully deter people from filling them up with large bags of household or commercial waste.

“They have also been adorned with stickers provided by Litter Free Dorset, encouraging people to take their litter home if the bin is full.

“I hope the new bins are warmly received by local residents and seafront visitors alike, and want to thank our friends at Swanage Town Council and Litter Free Dorset for their support.”
